THE DREAM

The Energy of Healing

by Peter Szabo

In the early half of this year, Dr. Michael Cohen spent five months travelling throughout China and Tibet. The purpose of his trip was to study energy healing techniques in China. The brief but intense education he received there has furthered his understanding of energy and its role in healing.

"It is possible that the future of healing lies not at the cellular level, but at the energy level."

The word energy comes from the Latin word energia, means work. The Oxford English Dictionary defines energy as "the capacity of matter or radiation to do work." When a chiropractor adjusts a sublaxation, a flow of energy is restored where there had been interference or blockage. The nature of life and healing is largely involved with the transfer of energy; from cell to cell, from tissue to organ and from the elements to all life forms.

"The true model of health prescribes balance in your life. It's important to take time off from the practice."

In China, 20% of the hospitals incorporate a healing technique called Chi Kung into their basic medical procedures. The technique allows doctors and patients to work together to alter the rates of the patients' body metabolisms to successfully combat chronic diseases such as asthma and colitis, as well as early stages of cancer.

Dr.Cohen was fortunate enough to spend time interviewing professors and researchers about the healing properties of Chi Kung. "It's a fascinating technique," says Dr. Cohen, "with reportedly good clinical efficacy for chronic diseases." In addition to the positive physical results, Chi Kung also creates "some unexplained clinical benefits. It seems to support the theory that there is actually an energy transfer from the doctor to the patient."

Of course, this points to another reason why chiropractic is so effective. Chiropractor bring healing to their patients through the touch of their hands, and many chiropractors believe that their ability to focus their energy on a patient's ailments helps the healing as much as the actual physical adjustment of vertebrae.

Interestingly enough, chiropractic is relatively unknown in Chinese medical practices. "The Chinese hospital officials were fascinated by chiropractic," says Dr. Cohen. "They don't have an accurate system for specific vertebral pathomechanical analysis, like chiropractic does. They perform gross manipulations but they don't have a high understanding of the specific manipulation of specific vertebrae. I think there's a great opportunity for any chiropractors who might be interested in teaching chiropractic in China."

"Pathmark found me the right person and the right chiropractor made all the difference. My patients loved him, and I got the benefit of being able to focus on my studies."

Dr. Cohen's pursuit of learning also brought him to Tibet. In many monasteries and at the medical school in Lhasa, he was introduced to techniques derived from Indian and Chines medicine, such as pulse diagnostics. In addition to the invaluable educational experiences, Dr. Cohen took the opportunity to pursue some high adventure in the Himalayan Mountains. He joined the Austrian mountain climbing team and spent five days at the base camp on the awe-inspiring Mount Everest.

"We were only at 5,200 meters but there was so little oxygen, that I was completely out of breath after just eating a meal."

Dr. Cohen actually had occasion to apply his chiropractic skills while on the mountain, when the climbers complained of headaches.

"It was certainly a thrill to practice chiropractic at Mount Everest. The team was very happy when my adjustments helped alleviate the headache patterns that they'd accepted as symptoms of altitude sickness and exposure to high pressures. I offered my services to them for their next climb of Everest."

Dr. Cohen makes it a priority to take one extended trip every three years. "The true model of health prescribes balance in your life. It's important to take time off from the practice for two reasons. One, it rejuvenates you as a human, and two, it allows you to educate yourself about new techniques. Satisfying both reasons allows your clinical competency to increase."

When asked how he feels about leaving his practice for such long periods of time, DR. Cohen was thankful for the support that Pathmark Locum Service provided. "The key is to get a good chiropractor to take over your practice, while you're away. Pathmark found me the right person and the right chiropractor made all the difference. My patients loved him, and I got the benefit of being able to focus on my studies."

Dr. Cohen's capacity to provide healing energy has no doubt been enhanced by his time in China and Tibet. Not only has he gained more awareness and knowledge about the nature of healing in the human body and the relationship between healer and healed, but he has satisfied his need to improve his skill as a chiropractor.

At the same time, he has given himself the opportunity to heal his own depleted reserves. Regenerating his own energy allows Dr. Cohen to efficiently transfer healing energy into the bodies of his patients. By supporting his patients' physical health, Dr. Cohen's purpose is revitalized and he can repeat the healing cycle on an ongoing basis. The cycle of healing energy, as with all forms of energy, is complete, balanced and infinite.
